Every way to record

Six ways a student can record, each shown click by click. Every one ends the same way: the video goes into Studio and is turned in there. Page 2 shows that part: One way to turn it in → · Three ways to assign it → · Student page: upload to Studio →

Which one? Start with what the student is making

Show my screen and talk	Studio Capture ↓	Nothing to install. Saves straight into Studio.
Show my face: a speaking answer, a reflection	Studio Capture ↓	Same tool, camera on, screen off.
Screen recording with easy pause, redo and trim	Screencast-o-Matic ↓	If it already opens on the laptop. Saves straight into Studio.
Cut out a mistake, join clips, add captions	Clipchamp ↓	Real editing in Edge with the school login.
Talk over my slides	PowerPoint ↓	Records one slide at a time, so a mistake means redoing one slide.
Voice only: an oral reading, a language answer, a podcast	Sound Recorder ↓	Already on every Windows laptop. Set it to MP3 first.
Filmed away from the laptop	Phone camera ↓	Move the video to the laptop, then put it in Studio.

Screencast-o-Matic is already on many laptops. On some student laptops it is blocked for now while IT gets it approved. If it will not open, use Studio Capture: same result, nothing to install.

1 · Studio Capture: screen, face, or both

Built into Studio. Nothing to install. Works in Edge. The recording saves straight into the student's Studio library.

1 Click Studio in the left-hand Canvas menu.

The student's left-hand Canvas menu with Studio circled.

Drawn from the student menu in our Canvas.

2 Click Create, then Studio Capture.

The Create menu open, with Studio Capture circled. Screencast-o-Matic and Add Media are below it.

Screencast-o-Matic, just below it, is choice 2 on this page.

3 Choose what to record, using the buttons along the bottom.

The Studio Capture window. Along the bottom: camera, microphone, Screen Capture and Start Recording, all circled.

Camera (first button): pick your webcam for your face, or leave it off. Microphone (second): pick your microphone. The first time, Edge asks to use them: click Allow. Screen Capture: see the next step. Start Recording lights up once something is on.

4 To record your screen: Screen Capture → Enabled. Edge asks what to share.

The Screen Capture menu open with Enabled circled.

Pick a tab, a window or your entire screen, then Share. Showing a video and need its sound? Pick the tab and turn on Also share tab audio. Entire screen asks if you want your webcam in the corner.

5 Click Start Recording. When you finish, click Finish.

Pause and Continue are there if you need a break.

6 Type a title (your last name, first name, assignment), then Save Media.

The title cannot be changed later.

Done. The recording is in the student's Studio library.

2 · Screencast-o-Matic: pause, redo, trim

Already on many laptops, and it opens from inside Studio. The easiest recorder to fix mistakes in: pause any time, back up and record over a bad part, trim the ends. When it is done it saves straight into Studio.

1 Studio (left menu) → Create → Screencast-o-Matic.

The Create menu open. Screencast-o-Matic is the second choice, just below Studio Capture.

Inside an assignment's Studio window the same choice is called Screen Capture. The very first time, it asks to Download the recorder: install it, then click Allow. If the laptop says it is blocked, use Studio Capture (choice 1) instead.

2 Before recording, pick Screen, Webcam or Both, and check Narration shows your microphone.

Computer Audio on if a video on screen needs its sound. Size sets how much of the screen is recorded.

3 Click Record. Made a mistake? Click Pause.

While paused, click Back to just before the mistake, then Record again. It records over the bad part and carries on. Click Play to hear it back first.

4 Click Done. Want to trim the ends? Click Edit.

Want to start over completely? Delete throws the recording away.

5 Type a title (last name, first name, assignment), then Upload.

Wait until the upload finishes, then click Continue.

Done. The recording is in the student's Studio library.

3 · Clipchamp: record, then cut and caption

Microsoft's video editor. Runs in Edge with the school login, nothing to install. Use it when the video needs editing: cut a mistake out of the middle, join clips, add titles or captions.

1 Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/launch/clipchamp and click Record screen or Record camera.

Clipchamp home with Upload a video, Record screen, Record camera and Create video project; Record screen and Record camera circled.

2 Turn on Mic (and Camera for your face in the corner), then Start screen recording.

The Clipchamp recorder with Mic and Start screen recording circled.

Script is a teleprompter. Edge asks what to share: tab, window or entire screen. Each recording can be up to 30 minutes.

3 To edit: Create video project → Record & create → pick Screen and camera, Webcam, Screen or Audio.

The Clipchamp editor with Record and create circled; options Screen and camera, Webcam, Screen, Audio, Text to speech.

Drawn from the real screen, September 2026. Your colors may differ.

The recording drops onto the timeline. Cut out a mistake: put the playhead at its start, press S; at its end, press S; click the middle piece; press Delete. Captions: the captions panel → Transcribe media, then fix any wrong words.

4 Click Export → 1080p. When it finishes, download the .mp4 to the laptop.

Name the file first: last name, first name, assignment. Keep it under about 10 minutes so Clipchamp stays quick. Audio-only exports come out as .m4a, which Studio will not take; for voice only, use Sound Recorder below.

Done. The student has an .mp4 file on the laptop.

4 · PowerPoint: talk over your slides

In the PowerPoint app on the laptop (not PowerPoint in the browser). Voice, face and slides, recorded one slide at a time.

1 Open the slides. Click the Record tab, then From Beginning.

The PowerPoint ribbon with the Record tab (1) and From Beginning (2) circled.

Drawn from the real screen, September 2026. Your colors may differ.

Put what you want to say in the slide notes first. They scroll at the top of the recording screen like a teleprompter.

2 Click the red button, wait for the countdown, and talk. Move to the next slide as you go. Then click Export.

The PowerPoint recording screen: Edit, timer, the red record button (3), camera and microphone, and Export (4) circled.

Drawn from the real screen, September 2026. Your colors may differ.

Camera and microphone buttons are next to the red button; click them to turn either off. Pause a beat before speaking on each new slide, because nothing records during the slide change. A bad slide? Go back to it and record just that one again.

3 Name the file, click Browse to pick where it saves, then Export Video.

The Export to video screen: File Name, Browse (5) and Export Video (6) circled.

Drawn from the real screen, September 2026. Your colors may differ.

Pick a folder you can find again, like Documents. It saves an .mp4 in Full HD. Exporting takes a minute or two; leave PowerPoint open until it finishes.

Done. The student has an .mp4 file on the laptop.

5 · Sound Recorder: voice only

Already on every Windows laptop. One setting first, because Studio takes .mp3, .wav and .wma, but not Sound Recorder's usual .m4a.

1 Open Sound Recorder from the Start menu. Click ••• → Settings → Recording format → MP3.

Sound Recorder: the ••• menu (1), Settings (2), and Recording format set to MP3 (3), circled.

Drawn from Sound Recorder on a school laptop, September 2026.

You only do this once; it stays on MP3.

2 Click the red button to record. Click it again to stop.

To find the file: right-click the recording → Show in folder. Rename it: last name, first name, assignment.

Done. The student has an .mp3 file on the laptop.

Now turn it in →

6 · Phone camera

For anything filmed away from the laptop: a lab, a performance, a sport skill, a demonstration.

1 Record with the phone's camera app.

Hold the phone sideways. Keep it short; long phone videos are very large files.

2 Get the video onto the laptop.

Easiest: upload it with the OneDrive app on the phone (school account), then on the laptop open OneDrive in Edge and click Download.

Done. The student has the video file on the laptop.
