Why Studio and not a link? When a student turns in Studio media, Canvas makes a copy that belongs to the teacher. It plays in SpeedGrader and the student cannot delete it or switch off access. A OneDrive or YouTube link can do both. (Canvas guide)

Pictures: put it in Studio (only if the video is a file)

A Click Studio in the left-hand Canvas menu.

The left-hand Canvas menu a student sees, with Studio circled.

Drawn from the student menu in our Canvas. It opens My Library, which stays private until the student submits.

B Click Create → Add Media → Browse Files, and pick the file.

The Add to My Library window. Browse Files is circled.

It uploads as soon as it is picked. The file name becomes the title and cannot be changed, so name it first. Studio takes .mp4, .mov, .wmv and .mp3, .wav, .wma. Not .m4a.

C Wait until the video's picture appears in My Library. It will be waiting there when the assignment is opened.

My Library with the uploaded video's picture circled.

Pictures: turn it in

1 Open the assignment. Under Choose a submission type, click Canvas Studio.

Choose a submission type: Upload, Canvas Studio (circled), More.

Some courses show Start Assignment first, then a Studio tab. Same next steps.

2 My Library opens. Click your video.

My Library inside the assignment, with the video's picture circled.

Not in Studio yet? Upload it right here: Create → Add Media → Browse Files, then wait for the picture.

3 Click Embed Media.

Leave the two switches as they are.

4 Tick the pledge box, then Submit Assignment.

The pledge checkbox and Submit Assignment, both circled.

Then Submission Details → press play.

Select everything inside the dashed box, copy it, and paste it into your assignment's description. It is written to your students and covers every place they get stuck. Delete any recorder you do not want them to use.

How to record and turn in your video or audio

Already made your video? Skip to Step 2. Already put it in Studio? Skip to Step 3.

Step 1. Record it. Pick one.

Your screen, with your voice: in Edge, click Studio in the left-hand Canvas menu → Create → Studio Capture. Choose a tab, a window or your entire screen, and click Allow for the camera and microphone. If you are recording a browser tab and need its sound, tick Also share tab audio. When you stop, it saves straight into your Studio library, so skip to Step 3 and choose it from My Library.
Your face, talking (webcam): in the assignment, Canvas Studio → Create → Webcam Capture. Allow the camera and microphone, record, and save.
Clipchamp (to cut out mistakes, join clips or add captions): go to m365.cloud.microsoft/launch/clipchamp and sign in with your school account. Click Record screen or Record camera, turn on Mic, then Start screen recording. Each recording can be up to 30 minutes. When you finish, export or download it as an .mp4 file.
PowerPoint (talking over your slides): in the PowerPoint app on your laptop, click Record at the top right, then the red record button. Talk through your slides. Then File → Export → Create a Video → Create Video. It saves an .mp4 file next to your slides.
Audio only: use the Sound Recorder app on your laptop. Before you record, click ••• (top right) → Settings → Recording format → MP3. Studio does not accept .m4a files, which is Sound Recorder's usual format.

Step 2. Put your video in Studio.

If you recorded with Studio Capture or Webcam Capture, it is already there. Go to Step 3.

If your video is a file on your laptop (from Clipchamp, PowerPoint, Sound Recorder or your phone):

Rename the file: last name, first name, assignment (for example Garcia Ana - Unit 3 video). The file name becomes the video's title, and you cannot change it later.
Click Studio in the left-hand Canvas menu.
Click Create → Add Media → Browse Files, and choose your file. (Or drag the file onto the page.)
Wait until your video's picture appears in My Library. Leave the page open until it does.

Step 3. Turn it in through Studio. Do not send a link or email the file.

Open this assignment. Under Choose a submission type, click Canvas Studio. (If you see a Start Assignment button, click it first, then the Studio tab.)
Your My Library opens. Click your video's picture. (Skipped Step 2? You can upload from here too: Create → Add Media → Browse Files, then wait for the picture.)
Click Embed Media.
Tick the pledge box.
Click Submit Assignment.
Check it: click Submission Details and press play. If you can see it there, I can see it.

If something goes wrong

A recorder asks you to download or install something: close it. That recorder is blocked on school laptops right now. Use Studio Capture or Clipchamp instead.
No sound: click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar and set the microphone to Allow. Also check Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
Your file does not show up in Browse Files: it is probably an .m4a audio file. Record again in MP3, or record with Webcam Capture instead.
The upload is slow: keep the video short, and export at 1080p, not 4K. Stay on the page until it finishes.
You turned in the wrong video: click New Attempt and do Step 3 again.

How to post your video or audio in this discussion

Record it with Studio Capture, Clipchamp, PowerPoint or Sound Recorder (set to MP3). Name the file with your name first.
Click Reply.
In the reply box toolbar, click the Studio icon. Don't see it? Click the ⋮ or Apps icon and choose Studio.
Your My Library opens. Already put your video in Studio? Click its picture. Not yet? Create → Add Media → Browse Files → choose your file, wait for the picture, then click it.
Click Embed Media.
Type anything else you want to say, then click Reply.

Do not paste a OneDrive or YouTube link. Your classmates may not be able to open it.

Canvas's steps: Embed Studio media in a discussion reply (student) →

Set up the assignment so Canvas Studio appears (1 min)

Assignment → Submission Type: Online → tick File Uploads → Save.

Leave “Restrict upload file types” off	If you limit it to .pdf or .docx, the video has nowhere to go.
Not External Tool	External Tool → Studio is for a Studio video quiz. Student Studio submissions do not work that way.
Text Entry works too	Students use the Studio icon in the text box. Handy when you want a written reflection and the video in one submission.
Media Recordings is Canvas's own recorder, not Studio	It records camera and microphone only, with no screen, and the file does not become your Studio copy. Use File Uploads.

Recording your own videos (1 min)

Every recorder above works for you too, and the Screencast-o-Matic recorder opens on teacher laptops. Whatever you record, put it in Studio → Create → Add Media, then embed it with the Studio icon in the page editor. Students see it with no ads, it can be captioned, and it survives a course copy.

Recording a YouTube video that will not play? That routine is on the Studio hub: Canvas Studio — record, share, assess, innovate →

Something went wrong (2 min)

A recorder asks the student to download or install something	That is the Screencast-o-Matic recorder. The first time, it installs a small app; then click Allow. On some student laptops it is blocked for now while IT approves it. In the assignment's Create menu, Screen Capture may lead there too. Use Studio Capture from Studio in the left Canvas menu, or Clipchamp.
No Canvas Studio button on the assignment	The assignment is not set to File Uploads, or it restricts file types. Fix the setting; students do not need to do anything.
The recording has no sound	Microphone: Edge's camera/mic prompt was blocked (click the lock in the address bar → Allow), or Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone is off. Computer sound: only a recorded tab carries it, and only with tab audio turned on.
The student's audio file will not upload or does not appear	It is an .m4a file. Studio takes .mp3, .wav and .wma. Have them set Sound Recorder to MP3 (••• → Settings → Recording format) and record again.
A student sent a OneDrive link or emailed the file	Ask them to resubmit with New Attempt → Canvas Studio → Add Media. You get your own copy; a link can be deleted or unshared.
Wrong title on the video	It cannot be edited after upload. Grade it anyway, or have them rename the file and upload again.
The upload is slow or stalls	Export at 1080p, not 4K, and keep the video short. Studio takes files up to 10 GB, but a long 4K file on home Wi-Fi is how an upload fails at 11 pm.
