Blooket — quiz games students join with a nickname, not an account

Blooket turns a question set into a game. Only the teacher needs an account. Students join with a code, a QR code or a link, and type a nickname. At RJ, keep it that way: no student accounts. Then no student information goes to Blooket, and there is nothing to clear first.

Idea starters, not finished practice. None of this is an expectation. The questions are yours. I support how it sits in Canvas.

01 Your account and the free plan

Sign up at blooket.com with your RJ email. Build a question set, import one, or copy a public set and edit it. Check a public set before you play it. Anyone can publish one.

The free plan (Blooket calls it Starter) allows 60 players in a live game and homework due up to 14 days out. The paid Plus plan raises those to 300 players and 365 days, and adds question-by-question reports for each student. Plus is a personal purchase, not a school one. What Plus adds →

Want a school-paid game tool? RJ licenses Gimkit. Ask Educational Technology for a seat. Gimkit at RJ →

02 Run a live game

Open your set and click Host.
Pick a game mode, then set the time or goal.
Choose how names work (see the box below), then click Host Now.
Put the screen up. Students go to play.blooket.com and enter the code, or scan the QR code.
After the game, open the report to see which questions the class missed.

How students join →

Random names

Turn on Use Random Names and Blooket assigns every nickname. Nobody types anything, and nothing can be inappropriate. You won't know who is who in the report. Random names →

First name, last initial

Leave random names off and tell students exactly what to type. The report is readable, and a name that isn’t what you asked for stands out right away.

Late joiners

Decide before you start whether students can join once the game is running. Late joining →

03 Send it home through Canvas

Blooket has no Canvas app. The homework link goes in a page or an assignment, and no score comes back to the gradebook.

Open your set and click Assign. On someone else’s public set, the button says Assign HW.
Set the due date (up to 14 days on the free plan) and the goal: correct answers, or questions answered.
In the settings, leave Allow Student Accounts off, and choose which game modes students can play.
Click Assign Now and copy the link.
In Canvas, paste the link into a page, or into an assignment if you want it on students’ To Do lists.

Students don't need an account to do the homework. Blooket rewards students who sign in, so some will ask. The answer at RJ is no. Blooket on assigning homework →

Graded, or practice? Blooket scores reward speed and luck as well as knowing the answer. If a score goes in the gradebook, you enter it by hand. Should this be graded? →

04 Why no student accounts

What Blooket gets

With no student accounts, Blooket gets only the nickname a student types. Blooket's policy says it is ad-free and never sells or rents children's information. Blooket privacy policy →

The approved list

Blooket isn't on RJ's approved-services list. Nickname-only play needs no clearance. If you want students to sign in, email Educational Technology first. Families get a notice before students create accounts.

What to tell students

“Use the nickname I give you, and don't sign in.” If a student already has a personal Blooket account, that's their own business outside class. For class, they join as a guest.

05 Grow down the pathway

Same tool, four altitudes. Nobody is expected to be anywhere on this.

LEVEL I

Foundations — one clean game

Nickname rule set, late joining decided, and a set you have read all the way through.

LEVEL II

Enhance — read the report

After the game, reteach the two questions the class missed most, the same day.

LEVEL III

Deepen — practice between classes

A homework link in Canvas before the quiz, with the goal set to correct answers.

LEVEL IV

Innovate — students write the set

Students write and defend the questions, including wrong answers that sound right. Then the class plays their set.

06 Ask a colleague

The fastest help is a colleague who already does this. These teachers use Blooket in their Canvas courses, based on Canvas data from September 2026.
