Padlet — a free wall for class ideas, on your own account

Padlet is a shared board where students post text, images, links and video. RJ no longer has a school Padlet license, so the old rj.padlet.org account is gone. Teachers use their own free accounts, and a free account holds three padlets. Plan around that.

Idea starters, not finished practice. None of this is an expectation. What goes on the wall is your call. I support how it sits in Canvas.

01 What your own account gives you

Padlet is on RJ’s approved list as an on-demand provider, so families have already acknowledged it. There is no school contract. You sign up at padlet.com yourself, ideally with your RJ Microsoft login.

The free plan (Padlet calls it Neon) allows three padlets in total. Archive or delete one to make room, or reuse the same padlet with a fresh section each unit. Paid plans remove the limit, but that is a personal purchase, not a school one. Padlet plans →

Had padlets on rj.padlet.org? That school account is no longer available, and the old Canvas pages about it have been retired. Anything you need going forward lives on your own account.

02 Put a padlet in Canvas

Padlet’s Canvas app only works with the paid Padlet for Schools plan, so RJ doesn’t have one. Use a link or an embed instead.

In Padlet, open the padlet and click Share.
Copy the link, or choose the option to embed it and copy the embed code.
In Canvas, paste the link into a page or assignment, or paste the embed code using the HTML editor.
If you want to grade contributions, make it a Canvas assignment and grade in SpeedGrader. No score comes back from Padlet.

03 Keep it safe

Who can see it

Set the padlet’s sharing so only people with the link can open it, and don’t post the link anywhere public. Padlet’s safety settings →

What gets posted

Turn on content moderation before students post. Auto uses Padlet’s AI filter; Manual means you approve each post. Moderation →

Names and privacy

Students may see a login prompt when a padlet is embedded, and anyone not signed in posts as “anonymous.” Decide which you want and tell students. Padlet says it doesn’t train AI on personal content. Padlet privacy →

04 Grow down the pathway

Same tool, four altitudes. Nobody is expected to be anywhere on this.

LEVEL I

Foundations — one wall, set up safely

Link-only sharing, moderation on, and the padlet sits inside a Canvas page students already use.

LEVEL II

Enhance — every voice before discussion

Students post before the conversation starts, so quieter students are already on the wall when you open it.

LEVEL III

Deepen — sort the wall together

Use columns to group the posts in front of the class. Naming the groups is the thinking.

LEVEL IV

Innovate — the wall becomes the evidence

Students build a shared board as a unit project, and each post has to cite and answer one other post.

With three padlets, reuse is the skill. One well-built wall that you clear each unit beats three you forgot about.

05 Ask a colleague

The fastest help is a colleague who already does this. These teachers build padlets into their Canvas courses, based on Canvas data from September 2026.
