PRE-APPROVED · FREE TEACHER ACCOUNT · YOU CONNECT IT TO EACH COURSE

Edpuzzle in your Canvas course

A video with questions in it. Students can't skip ahead, and the score lands in your gradebook.

What do you need to do?

0 · Make my Edpuzzle account 1 · Connect it to my course 2 · Make an Edpuzzle assignment

Something isn't working I need help now

Edpuzzle is not in Canvas for the whole school. Each teacher connects it to each course, once. A new semester's course starts without it, even if you copied last semester's course. If Edpuzzle isn't under Find, that's why.

0 · Make your Edpuzzle account · first time only · 3 minutes

1 At edpuzzle.com, sign up with Continue with Microsoft. That's your RJ login, so signing in from Canvas later is one click.

Edpuzzle sign-in screen with Continue with Microsoft outlined in red

2 When it asks for your school, choose Regis Jesuit High School. Then My School shows you your colleagues' videos.

3 Edpuzzle emails you a "verify your account" link. Click it. Not there? Check your Junk folder.

Your free account holds 20 videos, for good. Deleting one doesn’t give the slot back, and a playlist counts every video in it (a 9-video playlist uses 9). Save only what you’ll assign; assigning a video you already have never uses a slot. Recording your own video? Use Canvas Studio instead and keep your 20 for YouTube and Edpuzzle videos.

1 · Connect Edpuzzle to your course · once per course · 5 minutes

You will go back and forth between two tabs: Edpuzzle (to copy two codes) and your Canvas course (to paste them).

1 In Edpuzzle, click your picture (top right), then your name.

Edpuzzle account menu, your name outlined

2 Click the School tab.

3 Scroll to the bottom. Set LMS to Canvas. Two codes appear, each with a Copy button. Leave this tab open.

4 In your Canvas course, click Settings (bottom of the course menu), then the Apps tab.

See a list of apps instead of tiles? Click View App Center.

5 Type Edpuzzle in the filter box. Click the Edpuzzle tile.

6 Click Add App.

7 Paste the two codes from Edpuzzle (Copy one, paste it, go back for the other). Click Add App.

Cross-listed sections? Do this once, in the course that holds all of them.

8 Refresh the page. Edpuzzle is now in your course menu. Click it. (The crossed-out eye means students can't see it. That's normal.)

9 If it asks you to sign in, click Continue with Microsoft. (Same screen as step 0.)

10 Pick a grade level and subject. Click Create class.

Done. This course is connected. Edpuzzle will now show up under Find when you make an assignment.

2 · Make an Edpuzzle assignment · 2 minutes per video

Build it in Canvas, not as a link on a page. A pasted link doesn't send the grade back.

1 Assignments, then + Assignment. Give it a name.

2 Set Submission Type to External Tool. Click Find.

3 Click Edpuzzle in the list. Not there? Go back to section 1.

Configure External Tool list with Edpuzzle outlined

4 Your Edpuzzle videos open. Tick the box under the video. Click the blue button at the bottom.

5 Check the title. Click the blue button again.

Title and instructions step, title outlined

6 On Settings, leave Prevent skipping on (it's on already). Click Assign.

7 Back in Canvas: click Select, set points and a due date, then Save & Publish.

Grades come back by themselves when a student finishes the video from Canvas.

Open-ended questions? Grade them in Edpuzzle, not SpeedGrader. Until you do, they count as 0. Hide the column first: Gradebook → the column's three dots → Hide grades, then Post grades once you've graded.

More, when you need it

Something isn’t working? The usual fixes · 1 min

“Edpuzzle isn’t in the Find list.” It is not connected to this course. Do section 01. This is the most common Edpuzzle question at RJ, and it usually comes up in the first week of a new course.

“Edpuzzle says ‘You’ve reached your limit.’” Your Canvas connection is fine, and you don’t need to pay. That message is Edpuzzle’s free plan, which holds 20 saved activities. Don’t delete videos to make room: Edpuzzle still counts deleted ones. Assigning a video you already have, to any class or again next year, never uses a slot. To get more room, invite a colleague (your picture → your name → Plan tab → referral link); when they sign up and verify, you each get 3 more. Edpuzzle on the content limit → Recording your own video? Canvas Studio has quiz questions built in, and it doesn’t use your Edpuzzle slots or need any setup. Canvas Studio →

“I copied my course and the Edpuzzle assignments don’t work.” Edpuzzle does not support copying or importing its assignments between Canvas courses. Connect Edpuzzle to the new course, then rebuild each Edpuzzle assignment through Find. Your videos are still in your Edpuzzle library, so rebuilding takes about a minute each.

“My sections all show up as one class.” That is expected. Edpuzzle puts every student in a Canvas course into one Edpuzzle class, even when the course has several sections. Use Canvas Assign To if a video is for one section only.

“The video is a white screen, or says it’s restricted.” Usually YouTube filtering or YouTube Restricted Mode, and sometimes an ad blocker. Try the same video on your own laptop first. If it plays for you and not for students, message me. Web filtering is mine. Edpuzzle on blocked videos →

“Everyone got a zero the moment they submitted.” Edpuzzle sends a score to Canvas as soon as a student finishes, and an open-ended question counts as 0 until you grade it. One ungraded question can drop a whole class to zero. Grade them in Edpuzzle — open the assignment, click Answers to grade, and the scores update in Canvas. Edpuzzle on exporting grades → To spare yourself the panicked emails, hide the column first: in the Gradebook, open the column’s three-dot menu and choose Hide grades, then Post grades once you have graded. Multiple-choice questions score themselves, and Edpuzzle’s Autograde can score open-ended answers against an ideal answer you write.

“A student watched it, but no progress shows.” Check the device first. Edpuzzle tracks progress reliably in Chrome, Firefox or Safari on a laptop, or in the Edpuzzle app on a phone. A phone browser is the usual culprit, and it also lets students skip. Progress not recording →

“A student’s grade never reached Canvas.” Confirm the student opened the video from the Canvas assignment and not from edpuzzle.com. If they did, and the score is in Edpuzzle but not in Canvas, that is the connection. Message me with the course and the student’s name.

Where to send a problem. If it breaks going through Canvas, that is the connection, and it is mine. If it breaks on edpuzzle.com too, that is the tool: support@edpuzzle.com. Who to ask →

Is Edpuzzle the right tool for this video? · 2 min

What it does well

Use a YouTube video, an Edpuzzle Original, or your own screen recording. Add questions at the exact moment they matter, plus voiceover or audio notes. Prevent skipping stops a student from jumping ahead. The video pauses when a student leaves the tab. Your dashboard shows how much each student watched, when, and how they answered.

What the free account gives you

The free Basic plan saves up to 20 activities in your account. Each colleague you refer who verifies an account adds three, for both of you. Pro Teacher removes the limit. Edpuzzle also offers AI question generation and AI grading of open-ended answers. Those fall under your course AI policy, like any other AI tool. The content limit →

Not for

Making a 40-minute lecture watchable. Questions do not fix length, so cut the video first. Not for graded work students do on a phone: prevent skipping is unreliable in a phone or tablet browser. And if the video is one you recorded, Canvas Studio has built-in quiz questions and needs no key or course setup. Canvas Studio →

Why each teacher connects it, and the fix for an older course that stopped connecting · 1 min

Edpuzzle is on Regis Jesuit’s Data Privacy Agreement & Approved Student Services in MyRJ as an on-demand provider. Families have already acknowledged that list, so you do not need to send anything home before using Edpuzzle with students. You accept its terms when you make your account. Because there is no school contract, Edpuzzle is not installed in Canvas for the whole school. Each teacher connects it to each course.

A new course starts without it, even if you copied last semester’s course into it. Every RJ teacher who uses Edpuzzle through Canvas reconnects it each semester. If you open Find and Edpuzzle is not there, this is almost always why.

Two ways Edpuzzle can live in Canvas. In your course: you do the three steps above, and nobody else needs to be involved. That is how every RJ course uses it today. School-wide: Edpuzzle would appear in every course without these steps. That is an administrator decision, and it raises questions a single course does not: what it costs, and whether it needs a signed data agreement. Message Jason Beyer if your department wants it.

An older course stopped connecting? After the Canvas security incident this year, Edpuzzle issued new shared secrets. Edpuzzle’s fix is to paste the new shared secret into the Edpuzzle app that is already in the course. Do not add a second copy. Leave the consumer key alone. In the course: Settings, then Apps, then View App Configurations, then the gear next to Edpuzzle.

Grow with it: from “it works” to “students write the questions” · 2 min

Idea starters, not finished practice. None of this is an expectation. Which video belongs in your unit is your call. I support the connection to Canvas.

Same tool, four altitudes. Only a few RJ courses use Edpuzzle through Canvas right now, so all four rungs are on this one page. Nobody is expected to be anywhere on this.

LEVEL I

Foundations — it opens and the score comes back

Edpuzzle is connected to the course, the assignment is built through Find, students open it from Canvas, and a grade appears without you typing it. That is the whole setup, and once it works it keeps working.

LEVEL II

Enhance — the question comes at the moment

Instead of five questions at the end, put one right where the idea turns: just before the reveal, or just after the step students usually miss. Turn on prevent skipping for anything graded. The video now asks students to think while they watch.

LEVEL III

Deepen — the dashboard plans tomorrow

Before class, open the results and find the question most students missed and the spot where they rewatched. Open class with that question. The video did the first pass, so class time goes where students actually got stuck.

LEVEL IV

Innovate — students choose the moment

Students pick the moment in a video that matters most and write the question for it, with a wrong answer that someone could believe. You build the best ones into next year’s lesson. Choosing the moment shows understanding.

Deepen is where Edpuzzle earns its place. Without the dashboard, it is a video with a quiz attached. With it, you know before class starts which idea to reteach. Edpuzzle on accountability and the dashboard →
