Students write the distractors

Answering a multiple-choice question needs you to recognize the right answer. Writing a wrong answer that fools 20 classmates needs you to know exactly where the understanding breaks. Those are not the same task, and only one of them ever gets assigned.

Idea starters, not finished practice. None of this is an expectation. On whether a given distractor is a real misconception in your subject, you are right and I am not.

Start with the honest part

The bar for Innovate in this course is strict: not faster, not easier — previously impossible. A student-made quiz is not by itself previously impossible. Students have written questions for each other on index cards for as long as there have been index cards.

So the claim here is narrower and sturdier. What is new is not that students can write questions. It is that a student can find out, within ten minutes, how many of their classmates their wrong answer fooled — and that number is feedback on the quality of their thinking rather than on their handwriting.

An index card gets collected and graded by you. A distractor gets tested against 25 peers and returns a number. That loop — write, deploy, measure, revise — used to require you to run an item analysis by hand across two class periods. Now it costs one game.

Why the distractor is the assignment

THE COGNITIVE ASYMMETRY

To pick the right answer from four options, a student needs to recognize it. Recognition is the weakest thing we test and the easiest to fake — it survives on partial memory, elimination and luck.

To write a wrong answer a knowledgeable classmate might choose, a student has to model somebody else’s reasoning and locate the exact point where it goes off the rails. That is a genuinely harder act, and it is closer to what a teacher does than to what a test-taker does.

It is also diagnostic in a way nothing else here is. A student who cannot write a plausible wrong answer does not understand the material, whatever their quiz score says. The distractors they hand in will tell you more than their last three grades.

The move, in three parts

1 · Give them the constraint

Every question fits in 95 characters, every answer in 60. That is Kahoot’s import limit and it is a gift — it forces the question down to the single idea it is about.

The brief: one correct answer, and three wrong answers somebody who studied might pick. Not silly ones. Silly distractors are the tell that a student is avoiding the task.

2 · Collect on the spreadsheet template

Kahoot imports quiz questions from a spreadsheet. Hand out the template, collect it, import once. You are not managing 26 student accounts and you do not need to.

It also sidesteps the age rules entirely — a student under 13 cannot share a kahoot with anyone, including you.

3 · Run it, then hand back the numbers

Play the class-built kahoot in Accuracy mode. Then open the Questions tab and give each student the count for their own item.

Your distractor was chosen by 11 people. That sentence is the whole point of the rung, and it is worth more than a grade on the question.

What it looks like in a room

End of a unit. Every student submits one question on the template — five minutes of class, or homework on the off day.

You import them and play the result. Most questions behave. Three do something interesting: a distractor written by a quiet student in the third row is chosen by 11 of 25 classmates.

So you ask her, in front of the room: “Eleven people picked yours. Why did you think they would?”

And she explains the misconception — not hers, the one she predicted other people had. She is doing item analysis. She has been in your class nine weeks and this is the first time anyone has asked her to think about the material from outside her own head.

The 11 is not available any other way. Her index card would have been collected, marked and returned with a check on it. The number is what turns a writing exercise into an experiment she ran.

The cheapest version, if the import feels like too much: ask for distractors only. You supply ten questions with the correct answers already written, students supply the three wrong options for each. Fifteen minutes, no template, and 80 percent of the thinking.

Where it breaks

Students write jokes. They will the first time, because a silly distractor is a way of not doing the hard part. The fix is the brief stated before they start — a wrong answer nobody would pick is a wasted answer — and then actually reporting the pick counts, which makes the joke answers visibly worthless.

You grade the questions for correctness. A question with a flawed distractor is more useful to talk about than a clean one. Grade the submission for a serious attempt and spend the class time on the interesting failures.

A student question is wrong and you play it anyway. Read them before you import. Twenty-six questions takes ten minutes and it prevents teaching the class something false in a format they will remember.

Only two free question types. Multiple choice and true or false — a real ceiling on what students can build. It also keeps the task on distractors, which is where the thinking is, so the constraint does more good than harm here.

Nothing lands in Canvas. No grade passback on a free account. If this is going in the gradebook, grade the submitted template as a Canvas assignment — that is the artifact anyway.
