Wayground — twenty accommodations free, twenty activities total

Quizizz changed its name in June 2025. Underneath, it is the one tool on this shelf whose free tier takes accessibility seriously — read aloud, extra time, hide the leaderboard, mute the sounds, all free. It is also the one with a hard ceiling you will hit in your second semester. Both numbers are twenty.

Idea starters, not finished practice. None of this is an expectation — not required, not an initiative, nobody is checking. Wayground is not licensed by RJ; the free tier is yours to sign up for. Before students enter anything into a tool the school has not cleared, check with Educational Technology first.

01 The name change

Quizizz became Wayground on June 24, 2025. The site is wayground.com. Quizizz Inc. is still the legal entity behind it, which matters only if somebody is looking at a signed agreement — Wayground states that contracts signed with Quizizz Inc. remain valid.

What did not change: accounts, logins, classes, your existing resources, and the data privacy agreements. Wayground also states that joinmyquiz.com still works for students and that existing links continue to function.

One caution from building this page: I could not confirm from here that the old quizizz.com domain actually redirects. Wayground documents that it does. Rather than rely on it, post wayground.com/join links in Canvas going forward, and if you have an old Quizizz link buried in a module from two years ago, click it yourself before a class does.

02 The accommodations — the actual reason to use this one

Every tool on this shelf will tell you it is accessible. This is the only one whose free tier ships twenty named accommodations you can switch on per student or per class, and several of them answer objections people have to game-based tools generally.

The ones worth knowing about first:

Read aloud	Free	Text-to-speech on questions. This is the one that changes who can take part.
Extra time	Free	Per question, or an extended deadline — two extra days or 50 percent more.
Hide the leaderboard	Free	The single best answer to the objection that these tools humiliate the students who are behind.
Turn off sound effects	Free	With a distraction-free display mode. Two settings, and the room stops being overwhelming.
Redemption questions	Free	A student who got one wrong gets another chance at it. The score stops being a verdict.
Translate, bilingual dictionary	Free	For a student still building English.
Dyslexia font, font size, spacing	Free	Set per student.
Up to three attempts, hints, fewer options	Free	Reduce the answer choices for a student who needs the field narrowed.
Desmos calculators	Free	Scientific and graphing, inside the activity.

Where this connects to the rest of the course. The accommodations arc here starts with what you are required to do and ends with designing so that fewer students need a separate version at all. 03 What free actually gives you — and the ceiling

Feature	Free?	What that means
Stored activities	20 — total	This is the ceiling and it is low. A teacher building a semester of material will hit it. Plan to delete, or plan to pay.
Participants per session	100	Generous. Kahoot free gives you 40, and only if you signed up correctly.
Question types	Ten, free	Multiple choice, multi-select, true or false, fill in the blanks, open-ended, interactive video, reading passage, draw, poll, word cloud. Compare Kahoot free, which gives you two.
Wayground AI	Free	Generate an activity from a document, a prompt, a website, a YouTube video, a standard, or a photo of a worksheet. Free tier. See the Innovate rung.
Session modes	All of them	Teacher-led, student-paced, team, and paper mode. Student-paced is a first-class mode here rather than an add-on.
Reports	Basic, free	Class-level, and shareable with colleagues and with parents.
Accommodations	Free	All twenty. See section 02.
LMS integration	No	Not on the free plan and not on the paid individual plan. School or district only.
Copying premium library content	No	You can see it; you cannot copy it into your own.

Wayground and Kahoot have opposite free tiers, and that is the whole choice. Kahoot: unlimited kahoots, two question types, 40 players. Wayground: ten question types and every accommodation, twenty activities, 100 players. If you build a lot and ask simply, Kahoot. If you build a little and need the task to reach every student, Wayground. The Kahoot page →

04 Reports

Four tabs. Participants gives per-student accuracy and lets you drill into one student. Questions gives per-question performance, sortable by accuracy and by average response time. Overview is a color-coded grid — green right, red wrong, blue not yet graded. Standards shows performance against tagged state standards.

The Questions tab sorted by response time is the one that earns its keep, for the same reason it does on every tool: a question missed slowly is a misconception and a question missed quickly is usually written badly. That distinction takes ninety seconds and it is most of the value.

Reports can be filtered, printed, downloaded and shared. Basic reports are free; the Standards tab and longitudinal growth tracking sit above the free tier.

05 Canvas, students, privacy — and who to ask

THE CANVAS ANSWER

The integration is good and you cannot have it. Wayground’s Canvas integration does deep-linking, automatic grade sync, roster import and single sign-on — genuinely better than Kahoot’s or Pear Deck’s. It is restricted to School and District plans, only teachers rostered under such a plan can use it, and an administrator installs it at the account level.

On a free account: post the join link, and any score is formative. Their Canvas documentation →

STUDENTS NEED ACCOUNTS — A REAL DIFFERENCE FROM KAHOOT

Wayground’s documentation consistently assumes a student account. Kahoot lets a student join with nothing but a nickname; Wayground appears not to, though I could not find a statement that explicitly forbids anonymous join. Treat student accounts as required until you have tested it, and that makes the privacy clearance question a real one rather than a formality. Under-13 signup asks for a parent email; students coming in through Clever or ClassLink are not asked for age or a parent email at all. Student accounts →

PRIVACY

Wayground states compliance with FERPA, COPPA and GDPR, holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022, encrypts data in transit, and says its design lets students take part without sharing personal information unless required. One artifact of an unfinished rebrand worth noticing: their trust center still sits on the old quizizz.com domain. How they protect student data →

THREE COLLEAGUES ALREADY FLUENT

Natalie Baldasare · Trevor Jackson · Leah Malm. Any of them will get you further in five minutes than this page will.

06 Grow down the pathway

Same tool, four altitudes. The rung is not which question type you used — it is how deliberately. Nobody is expected to be anywhere on this.

LEVEL I

Foundations — it runs

You have an account, an activity under the twenty, and a class that joined. Ten minutes of retrieval practice students were awake for. A real rung, and plenty of people stop here.

LEVEL II

Enhance — the accommodations are on for everyone

You stop treating read aloud and extra time as the version for four students and switch them on for the class. Nobody is singled out, and the task reaches further than it did.

Read the Enhance page →

LEVEL III

Deepen — the second attempt is the assessment

Redemption questions turn a score into a process. What you record is not whether they got it, but whether they got it after finding out they had not.

Read the Deepen page →

LEVEL IV

Innovate — students audit what the AI wrote

Wayground generates a quiz from a text in seconds, free, and warns you it may be wrong. Hand that to students as the assignment: find the questions the machine got wrong, and say why.
