Kahoot — free, and two settings away from being fair

Everyone knows what Kahoot does. Almost nobody knows that the default scoring rewards a lucky fast guess over a correct slow one, that there is a free mode which turns that off, or that the free player cap is either 40 or 10 depending on a box you ticked when you signed up. Those three facts are most of this page.

Idea starters, not finished practice. None of this is an expectation — not required, not an initiative, nobody is checking. Kahoot is not licensed by RJ; the free tier is yours to sign up for. Before students enter anything into a tool the school has not cleared, check with Educational Technology first.

TAKES one hallway

GETS YOU faster than any page

01 Sign up correctly — this is the one that bites

Kahoot asks what kind of account you want during signup, and the answer sets a limit you will hit in your first period and never understand.

A K-12 teacher account on the free plan allows 40 participants. A personal-use account allows 10. Same free plan, same features, same everything — different cap, decided by that one selection. A teacher who signs up as personal use tries a class of 26, watches it fail, and reasonably concludes the tool is broken.

If Kahoot is already refusing students in a class you know is under 40, that is what happened. The fix is in your account settings, not in the game.

Participant limits by plan →

Students need no account and never have. They join at kahoot.it with a game PIN and a nickname. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for, no data collected from them to join a live game. That is a genuine advantage over most of the tools on this shelf. Playing free as a student →

02 The speed bonus, and how to turn it off

WHY THE OBJECTION IS CORRECT

In a normal live Kahoot, points fall as the clock runs. A student who answers correctly in under half a second gets full marks; a student who answers correctly after thinking gets fewer. Kahoot publishes the formula, and their help center states plainly that the speed reduction cannot be disabled for live games.

So the standard complaint — that Kahoot rewards fast guessing over careful reasoning — is not a misunderstanding of the tool. It is an accurate description of the default. On a four-option question a fast guess is worth more than a slow correct answer often enough to matter, and the students who are quickest are not reliably the ones who understand.

THE FREE FIX, WHICH IS TWO CLICKS

Accuracy game mode — Kahoot now calls it the Accuracy experience, so search their help center for that. Kahoot’s own description: correct answers matter more than speed, no speed bonuses, everyone plays at the same pace, points based solely on correctness. It is free, it is a host option, and it changes who wins.

It also changes the room. The noise goes down, which some teachers will miss and most will not. If the energy is the reason you are using Kahoot at all, run classic. If the review is the reason, run Accuracy.

The second setting: on an assigned kahoot, turn the timer off entirely. Student-paced assignments are free (same 40-player cap, 28-day maximum deadline). With no timer there is no speed component at all, and the game becomes practice rather than a race. This is the version to send home. Assigning a kahoot →

03 What free actually gives you

Feature	Free?	What that means
Quiz — multiple choice	Yes	One of only two free question types. Everything you build will mostly be this.
True or false	Yes	The other one.
Puzzle, poll, slider, word cloud, drop pin, open-ended, brainstorm	No	All paid, at various tiers. If a colleague’s kahoot uses them, you can play it — you cannot build one.
Number of kahoots	Unlimited	Creation is not capped. Only the room is.
Players per live game	40 — or 10	K-12 teacher account: 40. Personal-use account: 10. See section 01.
Assignments — student-paced	Yes	Same 40 cap. Deadline maximum 28 days.
Team mode	Yes, three teams	More teams at higher tiers.
Reports	Basic, yes	Summary, per-participant and per-question. Advanced analytics is a paid tier.
Spreadsheet import	Yes	Quiz questions only. 95 characters for a question, 60 for an answer. That limit shapes what you can ask.
AI question generation	No	Paid tiers only.

The 95-character limit is a pedagogical constraint, not a technical one. A question that fits in 95 characters with 60-character answers is a recall question. That is fine — retrieval practice is exactly what this tool is for, and it is well evidenced. It is also why Kahoot is a poor instrument for anything you intend to grade.

04 After the podium

The leaderboard is the part students remember and the part with the least information in it. The report is the other way round.

Four tabs: Summary (average score, how long it took, and which questions were difficult), Participants (per-student accuracy, unanswered questions, who did not finish), Questions (question-by-question analytics), and Feedback on live games. It downloads as a spreadsheet.

The row worth your attention is the difficult questions line, and the reason is that in a live Kahoot a hard question and a badly-worded question look identical from the front of the room. The report separates them: a question everyone missed slowly is hard, and a question everyone missed quickly is usually written badly.

05 Canvas, honestly — and the colleagues to ask

THE CANVAS ANSWER

Link-out only, for you. A real Kahoot LTI 1.3 integration exists, but their documentation restricts it to EDU team plans with a minimum of 25 licenses, and a Canvas administrator has to configure it manually. On a free teacher account there is no integration and no grade passback. Post the join link in a Canvas page or announcement and treat any score as formative — which it should have been anyway. Their LTI requirements →

ASK A COLLEAGUE BEFORE YOU ASK A PAGE

Eight people in this building already run Kahoot well, and every one of them will get you further in five minutes than this page will: Lori Muniz · Kenzie Weed · Natalie Baldasare · Jenny Lynch · Kathleen Willson · Elvira Dominguez · Wayne Lilyestrom · Amalia Cardenas Cano.

PRIVACY

Kahoot publishes a trust center claiming FERPA, COPPA, GDPR, SOC 2 and ISO 27001, holds a 1EdTech data privacy certification, and states that it does not show ads to students or sell their information. Students joining a live game need no account and give no personal information beyond a nickname — which is the strongest privacy position of any tool on this page. Kahoot Trust Center →

One age note: accounts for students under 13 in the US are heavily restricted — among other things they cannot share a kahoot with anyone, including their teacher. Most of our students are 14 or older, so this rarely applies, but it is the reason a freshman’s kahoot sometimes cannot be handed in. Age-based restrictions →

06 Grow down the pathway

Same tool, four altitudes. The rung is not how good the kahoot is — it is what you do with what comes back. Nobody is expected to be anywhere on this.

LEVEL I

Foundations — it runs

You have a K-12 teacher account, the class joins, and the game finishes. Ten minutes of review that students were awake for. That is a real rung and plenty of teachers stop here happily.

LEVEL II

Enhance — the fastest hand stops winning

Accuracy mode on, or the timer off on an assignment. The result stops measuring reaction time and starts measuring what they know.

Read the Enhance page →

LEVEL III

Deepen — the report picks tomorrow

You open the Questions tab before the next class and one line of it changes your plan. The podium is entertainment; this is the instrument.

Read the Deepen page →

LEVEL IV

Innovate — students write the wrong answers

Writing a plausible distractor requires knowing the misconception it exploits. That is a harder task than answering the question and it is the one nobody assigns.
