Test Day, Step by Step

The settings take ten minutes. The room is where a test succeeds or falls apart. Do these in order.

Say this first — four sentences, every time

Nearly every failure on When it breaks is prevented by these, said before anyone opens anything. Even to seniors, even in May.

“Plug in, or make sure you’re well charged. Your device can’t go to sleep and your lid can’t close.”

Prevents “Failed to fetch,” the only failure that destroys student work.

“Close every app. On a New Quiz, leave only Edge open.”

Prevents the Surface keyboard failure and other window problems.

“Check the top of your screen: you must be on RJ-Wireless.”

Prevents “Unable to fetch server information.” Guest and old student networks fail silently.

“If you leave this room for any reason, bring your device to me first.”

The single most useful sentence here. It turns a lost exam into a two-minute pause.

Also tell them that LockDown Browser logs early exits and flags, that you will look at them afterward, and that most flags are innocent. The honest student is then far more likely to tell you when their device does something strange.

Getting in — it depends on the kind of quiz

Filled-in quiz icon: a New Quiz in Canvas

A

New Quiz (filled-in icon): students start in Edge. Close everything, open Edge, go to the quiz in Canvas and click it. LockDown Browser opens by itself.

If it doesn’t open, they click the rocket icon on that tab. No phone needed, so phones and watches can go away before anyone touches a device.

Outline quiz icon: a Classic Quiz in Canvas

B

Classic Quiz (outline icon): students open the LockDown Browser app. Close everything, open LockDown Browser, sign in to Canvas inside it, then open the quiz.

Signing in may ask them to verify on their phone, so phones stay out until every student is signed in. Collect them after, not before. (Chromebooks on a Classic quiz start in a regular browser, like New Quizzes.)

The access-code move — the strongest control you have

1

Everyone stops at the code screen. Nobody is in the exam yet.

2

Phones and smart watches away. Backpacks closed, or face-down and off at the front. Say “smart watches too.”

Classic quiz: do this once everyone is signed in, since they needed their phones to sign in.

3

Say the code, or write it on the board. Watch until every student is in the exam.

New Quiz Settings. Settings is circled at the top (1). Require a student access code is switched on with a code typed in (2).

4

Change the code right away. Quiz Settings (1) → type a new code in the access code box (2). Don’t share it.

The one people skip. Now the code can’t be texted to a later period, and a student who force-restarts cannot get back in without coming to you. No access code at all? Then collect phones once everyone is in the exam, and know you have no way to stop someone getting back in.

A sub is proctoring? Don't ask them to change the code. Give each section its own code ahead of time, so a code said in one period is no use in the next, and change it yourself once that class is in. The sub says the code out loud and nothing more.

Tell the sub each class's code, and which code to give quietly if a student gets kicked out after you change it.

A student needs to leave the room

The LockDown Browser toolbar with the question mark icon

The Proctor Exit option in LockDown Browser

1

They bring you the device. Click the X and type your exit password. If the X doesn’t ask for it, click the ? (or ⓘ) icon in the toolbar, then Proctor Exit.

No exceptions, however short the trip. A laptop left asleep inside a live exam can stop saving (“Failed to fetch”); that is how we lost answers on a Final Exam. Type the password yourself, at their desk.

2

They come back and start again the same way. If you changed the code, you give them the new one. Their saved work is waiting.

The timer picks up where it stopped, so time out of the room is given back. Say it before the test: “However the timer behaves, everyone finishes at the bell.”

Adding time while the test is running

The Current Quiz Accommodation window: Give additional time chosen (1), 0 hours and 10 minutes typed in (2), and Apply (3).

1

New Quiz: Moderate → the pencil at the end of the student’s row → Give additional time (1) → minutes (2) → Apply (3).

It adds to the timer they are on; they may need to refresh. Canvas added this in late 2024, so older guides that say you can’t are out of date. If the quiz has an Until time, give the student a later one too. Classic quiz: Moderate This Quiz → the clock icon. Every way, with pictures

Bell rang? Next: 3 · After the test → Two class periods? Two-Day Exams

Students in the room and something's wrong?

First, tell students: stay where you are, don't log out, and don't start a new attempt. What they've typed in Canvas is saved as they go.

TEAMS JASON BEYER for Canvas and exam problems

The Teams button fills in what we need: the quiz link (copy the address bar while you're on the quiz), the section and when class ends, what students see (a phone photo works), and how many students.

Device, login, Wi-Fi, or LockDown Browser won't install? That one is HelpDesk: call x8080.

JASON NOT ANSWERING? STOPPING IS SAFE

If it isn't fixed this period, end the exam: have students click Submit. Nothing is lost. Finish another day: Moderate → pencil → Reopen puts each student back where they left off.
