Your platforms, side by side

This department runs more publisher platforms than any other, and they do not behave the same way. The habit you learn on one will be wrong on another. Here's what differs, and where to check before you assume.

01 What runs where

02 Where the two documented platforms disagree

Same department, same Canvas, different rules. The cross-listing row is the one that catches people.
The question	The KWL Hub · French	VHL Central · Spanish
How you get in	Launch the Hub from inside Canvas. That is also what rosters you.	Log in at vhlcentral.com and build your section there.
Who gives you the books	Klett does, after you've launched. The “Assign Book” tab isn't yours and will error.	You do — you create your own sections.
How students get in	Launch from Canvas, then enter a book access code. Never register a new account with the code.	Launch from Canvas once and connect their own VHL account. You can't do it for them.
Cross-listing	Keep sections separate if you can. Cross-listed sections become one course on the Hub.	Cross-listing is fine — just build one matching VHL section for the combined course.
Grades into Canvas	There is an integration. The setup detail isn't written up yet — ask me before you rely on it.	Off by default. Turn sync on per section, and nothing arrives until the due date passes.

THE TRAP THIS PAGE EXISTS FOR

You teach across languages, you trade classes, and you talk to each other — which is exactly how one platform's answer gets applied to another. On cross-listing the two are opposites. Take the VHL habit into a French course, or the KWL caution into a Spanish one, and you'll find out in October rather than August.

Ask the question per tool, every time. It costs one message.

03 Decide it in August

Whatever you decide about combining your sections, decide it before students submit anything. That part is Canvas, not the publisher: cross-listing after submissions exist destroys those submissions and grades, and it can't be undone.

So the order is: pick your platform's answer → make the Canvas change → connect the tool. Not the other way round.

Mechanics, including un-merging: how to cross-list (merge) sections into one course.

04 Who to ask

FIRST — YOUR DEPARTMENT

On teaching with a platform — what's worth assigning, how the gradebook behaves once a term is running, the workarounds that appear in no vendor guide — your colleagues know more than I do. Ask them before you ask me.

THE CANVAS SIDE — ME

Course setup, cross-listing, turning a tool on in a course that's missing it, and anything where you're unsure whether a change is safe to make mid-term.

BOOKS, CODES AND ORDERS

Physical books, bundles, and the access codes students buy — a different question from “the platform won’t let me in.”

05 For your record

French → The KWL Hub. Spanish → VHL Central. Latin, Greek and Mandarin aren't documented yet — tell me and I'll fix that.
The platforms disagree on cross-listing. Check per tool; don't carry a habit across.
Decide before anyone submits. Cross-listing later destroys submissions.
Students never register an account with a book code — they always come in through Canvas.

ALSO IN THIS COURSE

Latin, Ancient Greek and Mandarin have no publisher platform, which has always been the awkward part of this page. For Latin and Greek there is now something better than a platform: six moves for collecting evidence a machine cannot produce, built around the sight passage you already set. Latin and Ancient Greek — when the machine can translate →

Four languages, more than one platform, and no shared rulebook. Ask the question per tool — especially about cross-listing.
