Integrating AI in Education: Information and Policies

The official Regis Jesuit policy on artificial intelligence — for teachers, students, and families. Your own course AI policy is written to sit inside this frame.

OUR APPROACH

As Jesuit institutions embrace the world as it is and strive to find God in all things, Regis Jesuit staff and students face both the opportunity and responsibility to harness technology's power for good. In today's dramatically transformed landscape, education must reflect this openness to navigate and shape this new world. However, cura personalis remains paramount. We believe technology serves us best when it fosters human connection, personal encounter, and deepens our capacity to respond to Jesus' call. This vision of mission-driven technology integration requires ongoing reflection, dialogue, and shared commitment from all.

Regis Jesuit is actively exploring Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools with the potential to substantially benefit our students' learning and future preparedness. This document clarifies our current stance, outlining the purpose and responsible use of such tools. Students may engage with them under explicit permission and supervision. Any unauthorized use of AI models for academic purposes violates our integrity policies and is subject to disciplinary action.

WHAT COUNTS AS AI

For purposes of this policy, “AI” refers to generative AI tools that produce text, images, code, or other content in response to prompts. This includes tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and similar platforms. It also includes AI-powered writing assistants like Grammarly, which now incorporate generative AI features. Standard spell-check and basic search engines are not considered AI tools under this policy unless they include generative features. When in doubt, students should ask their teacher.

UNDERSTANDING AI LIMITATIONS

While AI can be a powerful educational tool, all community members should be aware of its limitations:

Accuracy

AI models can generate incorrect, incomplete, or outdated information. Students are expected to verify AI-generated content against authoritative sources and should never assume AI outputs are factually correct.

Appropriate use

AI should support learning, not replace critical thinking. Students must develop their own understanding rather than relying solely on AI outputs. Using AI to bypass genuine learning undermines the educational purpose.

Bias and perspective

AI systems may reflect biases present in their training data or present information from limited perspectives. Students should approach AI outputs with the same critical lens they would apply to any single source.

Evolving technology

AI capabilities and risks continue to evolve rapidly. We regularly reassess our policies and tool selections as the landscape changes and will communicate significant updates.

EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS OF AI

Enhanced feedback

AI can provide immediate and detailed feedback on written work, helping students improve grammar, structure, clarity, and reasoning.

Research assistance

AI can assist students in gathering information, analyzing complex topics, and generating relevant citations, improving research efficiency.

Language learning

AI can offer personalized language practice and translation support, fostering language acquisition and communication skills.

Creative exploration

AI tools can spark creativity and inspire new ideas, enriching art and digital media projects.

Critical thinking & problem-solving

AI can present challenging scenarios and generate diverse perspectives, encouraging students to think critically and develop just solutions.

CLASSROOM AI POLICIES

Teacher-directed integration

Because different subjects benefit from AI in different ways, each teacher has the autonomy to establish AI guidelines tailored to their course's unique educational goals. Teachers will communicate their AI policies clearly in their syllabi, specifying allowed tools, usage guidelines, and expectations. These policies will be explicit and in writing. While individual teacher policies may vary, all policies must be communicated at the start of the course and applied consistently within each classroom.

Equitable access

When AI use is permitted or required for assignments, teachers will ensure students have access to appropriate tools during class time or provide equitable alternatives for students who may not have access outside of school.

Accommodation Plans

AI policies will be applied in accordance with students' Accommodation Plans. Students who may benefit from AI-based accommodations should work with their Learning Specialist.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

We prioritize academic integrity and use advanced plagiarism detection tools to maintain fairness. AI detection tools are one resource among several for identifying potential misuse, but no detection method is fully reliable. Teachers use professional judgment alongside these tools when evaluating student work. Unauthorized AI use or violation of a teacher's stated AI policy constitutes academic dishonesty and will be addressed according to the Academic Integrity section of the Student Handbook.

STUDENT ACCOUNTS AND OPT-OUT RIGHTS

Teachers may instruct students to create accounts to use AI models. We evaluate AI tools against Colorado's student data privacy requirements and require written agreements that address data use limitations, security safeguards, and data deletion. Tools that cannot provide these commitments are not approved for classroom use without individual parental consent. Parents have the right to inspect, receive copies of, and request corrections to their student's information.

We maintain a list of AI tools used in our classrooms, including the types of student information collected, the educational purpose for each tool, and a link to its privacy policy. This information is posted on the Technology Resources page in the Data Privacy Agreement & Approved Student Services resource.

This practice eliminates the need for individual parental/guardian approval for each website or program used in the classroom. However, we offer the choice to opt out. Parents/guardians who prefer their students not use AI should contact the Director of Educational Technology to organize alternative learning methods to ensure academic progress.

STUDENT PRIVACY AND SECURITY

We configure student accounts to collect only the minimum necessary information and disable advertising and tracking features wherever possible. We evaluate AI vendors against the following standards and require written commitments that address:

Prohibition on the sale of student information
Prohibition on the use of data for targeted advertising or profiling beyond the educational purpose
Prohibition on using student prompts, files, or outputs to train AI models
Appropriate data retention limits and deletion upon request
Security safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of student data

Tools that cannot meet baseline privacy requirements receive additional review before classroom use and may require individual parental consent.

When students use AI, they should avoid disclosing any personal information. Parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss online safety and privacy with their student(s). We understand the sensitivity of personal data and are dedicated to ensuring our students' privacy is safeguarded.

COMMUNICATION AND SUPPORT

Teachers are available to discuss their AI policies and answer questions. The Director of Educational Technology serves as a resource for parents/guardians and teachers regarding AI integration and student support. The Student Handbook contains detailed information on Academic Integrity policies and expectations.

We believe that AI, when used responsibly, can be a powerful tool for learning and growth. By working together, we can ensure that our students benefit from this technology while upholding academic integrity, student safety, and compliance with all applicable laws. As this technology evolves, we will amend our policies in response, always informing our community.

Please contact your student's teacher, the Director of Educational Technology, or the school administration if you have any questions or concerns.

AI is permitted under teacher direction, with cura personalis as the test. Your course policy is how this comes to life in your room.
