Assess by Design — Outcomes, Item Banks & Shared Mastery

The Deepen question is "how do I know it's working?" This page is the honest answer — and an invitation. You don't have to already be fluent in Outcomes or the Mastery Gradebook to start using them; I'll walk with you. The payoff is real: when a level builds assessment together and reads the same data, you stop guessing about student learning and start seeing it.

THE LADDER — SAME TOOLS, FOUR RUNGS

You can meet each of the four Practice questions with the same underlying tools — item banks, outcomes, the Learning Mastery Gradebook — just used a little further up each time. Start on the rung you're on.

FOUNDATION
Write clear questions; keep them in an item bank so they're reusable and shareable.

ENHANCE
Share item banks across a level; build unit and final exams together, not alone.

DEEPEN
Tie questions to outcomes; read the Learning Mastery Gradebook to see what stuck.

INNOVATE
Mastery Paths, ePortfolios, and level-wide evidence of learning over time.

START WHERE YOU ARE — ITEM BANKS BY TAXONOMY

An item bank is tied to you, not one course — reuse it anywhere you teach and share it (view or edit) with a colleague. Fix a question in the bank and it updates everywhere it's used. Build banks deliberately: group items by a taxonomy or level of complexity (Bloom's, DOK, or Fink's) so an exam can pull a balanced spread instead of forty recall questions.

You already have RJ-built tools for the volume, so your judgment stays on the questions:

BUILD EXAMS TOGETHER — YOU DON'T HAVE TO DESIGN ALONE

This is the collaborative heart of it. Share an item bank with your level (view or edit), and a unit test or final exam becomes a shared build: everyone contributes questions to the bank, and a New Quiz can pull a randomized set from it, so each student sees a fair, comparable draw. One person doesn't carry the exam; the level does — and because it's one bank, a fix by anyone improves everyone's version.

OUTCOMES — HOW YOU KNOW IT'S WORKING

An outcome is a statement of what a student should be able to do. Tie your questions and rubrics to outcomes and Canvas will roll up, per student and per class, how they're actually doing on each one — not just a points total, but "did they get this." A good outcome is specific and observable (what the student does), and small enough to teach and re-check. A level should also pick one calculation method for mastery — Canvas offers several (for example a decaying average, or "proficient after achieving it N times") — so everyone's numbers mean the same thing.

The teacher-side steps (all in your own course):

Turn on the Learning Mastery Gradebook: Course Settings → Feature Options, enable Learning Mastery Gradebook (and optionally the student version).
Pull the shared outcomes: Course Navigation → Outcomes → Find, browse your Account or department (sub-account) outcomes, and click + Add for the ones you'll assess. Everyone on the level adds the same ones.
Align them to your work: add an outcome to a rubric (Rubrics → Find/Create From Outcome → use for scoring → Import), or to a question bank (Quizzes → Manage Question Banks → select a bank → Align Outcome → Import — it applies to every question in the bank).
Read the data: Grades → Gradebook dropdown → Learning Mastery. You'll see each student against each outcome.

MAKE IT A LEVEL, NOT A CLASSROOM — WHO DOES WHAT

The whole value shows up when a level builds outcomes once and everyone assesses against them. That takes one setup move from me (as admin) and one from the department. Here's the clean split:

Admin vs. department responsibilities for shared outcomes
What I set up (admin)	What the department / level does
Create the department's sub-account outcome home (e.g. English), and grant the right people the "Learning Outcomes — add / edit / delete" permission there — or name a department/level Outcome person to own it. Outcomes created at that sub-account then cascade to every course in the department and can be pulled via Find. I'll also confirm the mastery-scale / calculation settings so they're consistent.	Draft the shared outcomes together (specific, observable, teachable), agree on the calculation method, and align them to your common rubrics and item banks. Every teacher pulls the same outcomes via Outcomes → Find, turns on the Learning Mastery Gradebook, and uses them on real assessments so the data accumulates.

The honest caveat: seeing all the level's data in one aggregate view is the part Canvas does least well out of the box — the Learning Mastery Gradebook is per course. For a true level-wide rollup we'd export outcome results or stand up a small dashboard. That's the piece I'd build with you; tell me when a level is ready and we'll figure out the reporting together.

WHEN YOU'RE READY TO GO FURTHER

Mastery Paths route students to different next steps based on how they did. ePortfolios let students collect and reflect on evidence over time. Both are Innovate-rung moves that build on the same outcomes — worth a conversation once the foundation is steady.

None of this is a test you have to pass alone. Book time and we'll set up your first outcome, or your level's shared bank, together — start with your item banks or just send me a note.
