Cold-call without the cringe

“Hands up” lets the same four students carry the room while everyone else quietly opts out. Random questioning flips that: because anyone could be next, everyone stays mentally in the game and actually prepares an answer. Done warmly, it raises participation without raising fear — and students tend to find it fun.

What the research says. Randomly calling on students (rather than taking volunteers) meaningfully increases voluntary participation over a term — students who are cold-called start raising their hands more on their own, and the effect grows as it becomes the norm (Dallimore, Hackathorn & Platt). The two things that keep it warm instead of scary: wait time — pause three to five seconds after asking, before naming anyone (students need time to think, and the silence is doing work) — and letting them rehearse first with a quick think–pair–share, so no one is ever caught with nothing to say.

The tool: Raider Randomizer

A fair, no-fuss random picker built at RJ. It makes questioning a game — students don’t know who’s up, so they all get ready — and it takes the “is the teacher picking on me?” edge off, because the draw is genuinely random. Put it on the room screen and let it choose.

Paste your class list once. Classes you set up in Raider Roster Hub show up here too, on the same computer. How Roster Hub works →

Keep it warm

Question first, name second. Ask the question, pause for everyone to think, then draw a name. If you draw first, only one brain switches on.
Let them rehearse. A ten-second think–pair–share before you draw means every student already has something to say.
Make “not yet” safe. “I’m not sure — can you come back to me?” is allowed. Come back to them. It stays a thinking routine, never a gotcha.
Follow up, don’t just move on. “Say more,” “why?,” or “who can build on that?” keeps the whole room accountable to the answer.
