TOOL REFERENCE · TWO WAYS IN

THE CATALOG

Tool Reference

Every tool the school runs and supports, reachable two ways: by what you're trying to do, or by the tool's name. Each one leads with the teaching goal — and says when it isn't the right call. The tool serves the lesson, never the other way around.

Start With What You're Trying To Do

HOW THE SCHOOL IS USING THESE

Curious who else is on a tool before you try it? The Raider Tool Board → shows how many people at RJ opened each tool this month, which departments are leading, and colleagues worth asking.

Show something on the room screen

Project from your laptop wirelessly, and let students share their screens with your approval. → Vivi

Check understanding mid-lesson

Ask a question and see every student's response live, so you know whether to move on. → Pear Deck

Make facts stick through practice

Low-stakes retrieval practice — the best-evidenced way to move facts into long-term memory. → Gimkit

Use or collect video

Record your screen, leave timestamped comments, and take student video submissions. → Canvas Studio

Secure a high-stakes test

Lock the browser so a test taken on a laptop can't wander to other tabs or apps. → LockDown Browser

Check originality and AI use

See similarity and AI-writing indicators on submitted work — one input to your judgment, not a verdict. → Copyleaks

Have students make something to show learning

A one-pager, infographic, presentation, or short video — created visually, and reviewable right inside Canvas. → Canva for Education

Give practice that grades itself

Randomized problem sets per skill, scored automatically and posted straight into your gradebook. → DeltaMath

Give every student the same calculator

Desmos: free, in the browser, on the AP exam from 2027 and it works inside a LockDown Browser quiz. → Desmos

Find the right tool for math or science

What we pay for, the free ones most teachers use, the newest ones, the one approval step, and the research on simulations with its limits named. → STEM tools

Make a video students have to think through

Questions at the moment that matters, no skipping ahead, and the score lands in your gradebook. → Edpuzzle

Give every student an AI practice partner

An AI activity you design around your own text and rubric, with every conversation visible to you. → Flint

Assign free practice and readings that score themselves

Free textbooks, adaptive practice and simulations, already installed in every course. → CK-12

Run publisher homework in science

Cengage homework linked section by section, with scores that sync to Canvas. → WebAssign

Teach 3D design

Professional CAD in the browser, free for teachers and students, linked from Canvas. → Onshape

Gather everyone’s ideas on one wall

A shared board for posts, images and links, on your own free account. → Padlet

Scan paper quizzes without student names

Paste your class list once; get numbered codes for ZipGrade and scores back by name. → Raider Roster Hub + ZipGrade

Play a review game with no student logins

Students join with a code and a nickname; only you need an account. → Blooket

Help a student get into a hard reading

A study tool students may choose. It answers from the reading, and can turn it into audio or a quiz. → Gemini Notebook

Notice a student slipping before it’s a crisis

See how a student is really doing across every course they are in, not just yours. → Grade Guardian

Vivi

Goal: project and share in the room. Wireless mirroring, student sharing with teacher approve/deny, one-tap whiteboard, live annotation, pause, privacy mode.

Not for: screen recording — it doesn't do that; use Canvas Studio.

Vivi →

ASK A COLLEAGUE

Elvira DominguezTEAMS · Presented through Vivi 104 hours in the last month, more than any other RJ teacher.

Tony RussoTEAMS · 97 hours presenting through Vivi in the last month, the second most at RJ.

FREE · PEER-SUPPORTED

Pear Deck

Goal: formative checks inside a slide deck. Draggable, drawing, text, number, and choice responses; a teacher dashboard; per-student Takeaways.

Not for: summative grading — it's for reading the room, and the dashboard and Takeaways are premium.

ASK A COLLEAGUE

Val SarracinoTEAMS · Recommended by Educational Technology.

Jason BeyerTEAMS · Happy to teach it, start to finish.

LICENSED · SUPPORTED

Gimkit

Goal: retrieval practice students enjoy. Live game modes, plus assignments; the useful part afterward is the Question Breakdown report.

Not for: graded assessment — assignments record only the first attempt and are Pro-only.

Canvas Studio

Goal: video that teaches. Screen capture, comment-at-timestamp, embedded quiz questions, student media submissions, viewing insights, ~85% auto-captions.

Not for: auto-captioning YouTube/Vimeo-hosted video, and captions need review.

Canvas Studio →Students recording? Every way to record →

ASK A COLLEAGUE

Will CropperTEAMS · 64 Canvas Studio videos built into his published pages and assignments, the most at RJ.

Chris BoyleTEAMS · 51 Studio videos built into his published course content, the second most at RJ.

LockDown Browser

Goal: assessment integrity on a laptop. Blocks other tabs and apps, copy/paste, print, screen capture, and virtual machines during a Canvas quiz.

Not for: webcam or room-scan proctoring — that's the separate Monitor add-on. Match the lockdown to the stakes.

LockDown Browser →

ASK A COLLEAGUE

Elvira DominguezTEAMS · Gave 114 LockDown Browser quizzes since last fall (84 New Quizzes, 30 Classic), the most at RJ.

Leah SieveringTEAMS · Gave 83 LockDown Browser New Quizzes since last fall.

Filippo ScrepantiTEAMS · Gave 62 LockDown Browser New Quizzes since last fall.

Lori MunizTEAMS · The one to ask about Classic quizzes: gave 43 LockDown Browser Classic quizzes last year, the most at RJ.

LICENSED · SUPPORTED

Copyleaks

Goal: a signal on originality and AI use. Similarity scoring, AI Source Match, and AI-phrase indicators on submitted work.

Not for: proof. No detector is reliable enough to accuse on its own, and it does not track writing-process or draft history. It's one input; the judgment is yours.

Copyleaks →

Canva for Education

Goal: students create to show learning — and clean visuals for your own materials. Templates and a drag-and-drop editor for presentations, infographics, posters, short videos, and whiteboards; real-time collaboration; student work reviewable inside Canvas. Free for you and your students, FERPA/COPPA-compliant, and it doesn't train AI on student data.

Not for: polish standing in for substance — if a Canvas page or doc would do the job, use that. Its AI features fall under your course AI policy, and an AI-made design still needs an accessibility check (alt text, contrast) — the tool won't do that for you.

Canva for Education →

ASK A COLLEAGUE

Andy ColellaTEAMS · Created more Canva designs (6) than any other RJ teacher in the last 30 days.

Laura D'AnnaTEAMS · Published six Canva designs in the last 30 days.

LICENSED · SUPPORTED

DeltaMath

Goal: practice that grades itself and tells you where the class is. Randomized question banks per skill, mixed problems for spiral review, timed fluency skills, embedded video, and — on our INTEGRAL license — custom problems, standards filtering, and test corrections built individually from each student's own test.

Not for: building on DeltaMath's own site and pasting the link into Canvas — that route carries no grade passback and usually leaves students on a blank page. Every assignment goes in as an External Tool assignment chosen through Find.

DeltaMath →

ASK A COLLEAGUE

Leah MalmTEAMS · Her students have solved 26,510 DeltaMath problems this year, the most at RJ.

Brad DoraisTEAMS · His students have solved the most problems so far in September (7,506).

Desmos

Goal: one calculator for every student, free, in the browser, no account. Graphing, scientific, geometry and 3D; tables, regressions, sliders and the statistics functions AP Statistics needs. From May 2027 it is the calculator built into every AP exam that allows one, and it is already the one in the digital SAT. Works inside a LockDown Browser quiz with one setting and one link.

Not for: a no-calculator quiz — it will factor, solve and graph anything. And not a replacement for the handheld a student already owns; every exam still allows one.

FREE · PRE-APPROVED · YOU CONNECT IT

Edpuzzle

Goal: a video students have to think through. Questions placed at the right moment, prevent skipping, a pause when they leave the tab, and a dashboard of who watched what. Scores sync to Canvas when the assignment is built through Find.

Not for: a long lecture, or graded work on a phone. It is not installed for the whole school: you connect it to each course yourself in Settings → Apps, and again in each new course. The free plan holds 20 activities.

FREE · IN EVERY COURSE

CK-12

Goal: free practice, readings and simulations with scores that return to Canvas. Already under Find in every course.

Not for: anything graded where students might skip Turn In. The score only comes back when they click it. Its AI tutor, Flexi, falls under your course AI policy.

CK-12 →

ASK A COLLEAGUE

Trevor JacksonTEAMS · 53 CK-12 assignments this semester, the most at RJ.

Kathleen WillsonTEAMS · 21 CK-12 assignments already due this semester.

Not for: changing the start date after students are in. It is locked once they open the course.

WebAssign →

Sandy RobertsonTEAMS · 16 WebAssign assignments set up this semester.

George MitsuokaTEAMS · Links Onshape work into his course this semester.

Raider Roster Hub + ZipGrade

Goal: scan paper quizzes with ZipGrade using numbered codes, then get the scores back beside your students’ names. Roster Hub runs in your browser; nothing you paste leaves your computer.

Grade Guardian

Goal: cura personalis, with the whole picture in front of you. One view of how a student is doing across every course they are in — grades, trends, your notes, and who else is already walking with them. It tells you which student to ask about before anyone has to tell you.

Not for: a verdict. It shows you a pattern, never a reason. The conversation is still yours to have.

Three Tools, and the Thing That Breaks on Each

These three are used mostly in Math and Science. I support the connection to Canvas; the departments own how to teach with them, and they'll get you further on that than I will. What I can tell you is the failure that comes up every year on each one.

DeltaMath

“My student gets a login screen instead of the assignment.” Almost always a browser setting blocking cross-site tracking. It looks like an account problem and isn't — integration students never set a password, so that screen is a dead end by design. Checking Load This Tool In A New Tab on the assignment fixes most of them.

“DeltaMath is grayed out.” The annual Declare Your School step was skipped. Once a year, easy to forget.

Setup, grade passback and the due-date problem on cross-listed courses: DeltaMath →

Soundtrap →

“A student’s work disappeared.” Nearly always the same cause: they went to the Soundtrap site directly instead of launching from inside Canvas. That creates a duplicate account, and the work is in the other one.

Worth saying out loud on day one: always launch from Canvas. It prevents the whole class of problem.

Gizmos →

“My student can't get into Gizmos.” Student access is handled by Christine Archer Davison — carcherdavison@regisjesuit.com. Include the student's name and the course they belong in, or it comes straight back to you as a question.

Three different things share the name. A Gizmo is a single interactive simulation. A STEM Case is a longer guided scenario built around several. The Handbook is the reference material.

If one won't launch from Canvas at all, that's the connection and it's mine — which Gizmo fits a unit is a Science department question.

The question that sorts these fastest: does it break when you go through Canvas, or on the tool’s own site too? Through Canvas is the connection, and that’s mine. On the tool’s own site is the tool — see Who to ask.

Pick the tool the goal asks for — sometimes that's none.
