Five Things That Go Sideways — and the Fix

Students can't see your course

An unpublished course is invisible to students — and so is any unpublished module or page inside a published course. The single most common first-morning surprise.

Fix: Publish the course from the Home page, then confirm today's module is published. Before first period, not during it. → How to

Attendance doesn't live in Canvas

Attendance of record is taken in MyRJ. Canvas has a roll-call tool, but it isn't what the school runs on, and marks there don't count.

Fix: Take attendance in MyRJ from the first day. Confirm your division's exact process if you're unsure. → How to

Your roster is off

A student appears who shouldn't, or one you expected is missing. Rosters are managed centrally, not edited in Canvas — and they keep shifting through the first several days as schedules settle.

Fix: Don't add or remove students in Canvas. Route corrections to the registrar; the enrollment flows into Canvas once it's fixed at the source. → How to

Students can't find what to do

A blank home page, or a course that opens onto a pile of files, gives students nowhere to start. On day one that reads as disorganization before you've said a word.

Fix: Set the home page to your current module (or a short landing page), and make today's task the top item. One predictable front door. → How to

The room tech won't cooperate

Projecting to the room display runs through Vivi. Sorting it out live, in front of a class, is the version to avoid.

Fix: Log in to Vivi and select your room ahead of class. Once connected, you can share your screen from anywhere in the room. → How to

Stuck on any of these in the moment? Teams me — I'll usually see it within a few minutes, or check the New Ignatian Educator FAQ, or ask the Canvas LMS Support Assistant (GPT). In week one, no question is too small.

If it's the laptop or a login rather than the course, HelpDesk at x8080 will be quicker than I will. Everything else: Who to ask.

Get these five right and the first day is yours.
